Rate of reaction

Learning objectives

  • To understand the effects of temperature on reaction kinetics.
  • To understand the effects of concentration on reaction kinetics.
  • To illustrate the probability of reaction depending on the temperature and concentration.
  • To see the concentrations of reactants and products as a function of time.

Some chemical reactions are very fast (e.g. combustion of gasoline), and others very slow (e.g. rusting). For various practical reasons, it is interesting to understand why a reaction is fast or slow. It requires knowledge of the parameters influencing the reaction rate.

Among the factors influencing the chemical kinetics, the system temperature and the concentration of reactants are paramount. These two parameters affect the probability of encounter and reaction between the reagents.

Note: This simulation offers a very simplified view of the reality of a chemical reaction. Scales and proportions are not respected.
