Artery

Learning objectives

  • To illustrate what atherosclerosis is.
  • To illustrate the principle of angioplasty.

Veins and arteries are the largest blood vessels in the human body. An artery can become clogged by fatty deposits, called plaques, that form on its internal walls. The flow of blood is thus reduced and surgical intervention becomes necessary.

Angioplasty is a relatively non-invasive technique that permits dilation of the artery at the point of narrowing (also known as “stenosis”).
