Square tiling

Learning objectives

  • To observe and reproduce geometric patterns.
  • To identify reflection symmetry in patterns.

Paving is an ancient technique used for surface coating. Floor tiling and wall mosaics are common examples and strong markers of time and culture.

  • Paving is considered geometric if the shapes are polygons.
  • Paving is considered regular when the polygons are all the same type, such as hexagonal, triangular, or square.

This animation presents eight square paving designs to complete. This game provides an opportunity to explore the symmetries and regularity of geometric shapes.

Some of the patterns represented here are characteristic of a Greek frieze, an Islamic paving, a Portuguese azulejo, or a mathematical challenge.
